In partnership with the MirandaNet Fellowship, the professional organisation, Technology, Pedagogy and Education Association (TPEA) is holding its 35th annual conference 2023 “Educating and Empowering All Our Digital Citizens” hosted at The Bedford Swan Hotel on Monday 3rd and Tuesday 4th July. This year’s conference promises to be an exciting and informative gathering, featuring keynote speeches, panel discussions, and presentations by renowned experts in the education and research field. In particular talks on the different approaches to edtech being pursued in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Our conference is designed to bring together professionals, researchers, teachers, and students who are passionate about EdTech and digital skills in the curriculum, providing a platform for exchanging ideas, discussing new developments, and networking with peers. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or just starting out in your career, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to learn, connect, and engage at our conference.
With a diverse range of sessions and activities, our conference will appeal to a broad audience. MirandaNet is Entering a New Partnership
We established the MirandaNet Fellowship in 1992 and we now have over 1,100 international members.
One of the most important contributions members have made is to the Knowledge Hub where the history of digital technologies in education can be traced over three decades. There are many other reports that will be helpful to any student of the subject.
Over the last five years MirandaNet has worked closely with ITTE now TPEA on various activities and we feel that the time has come to merge the two memberships. We will also archive the Mirandanet website so that all the resources can still be searched. We also want to merge the two mail lists and promote the kind of lively discussion that seems to have disappeared during Covid. We believe this can be done quite smoothly as TPEA has a free membership level as well as costed levels. Those who do not wish to join this transfer will be given a chance to withdraw.
You will find here photos of the return of Bozena Mannova and myself, Christina Preston, in September to Charles Hotel, Prague, where we held our first Czech Miranda Web Wise Teachers conference in 1997. Were you there?
I’d welcome any anecdotes and stories you have about your involvement with MirandaNet over the years that we can share. Please send them to me to build into an article about the experiences we have shared. I think Covid has made us more appreciative of the opportunities we have had to meet face to face despite the value of zooming!

Improving School and University Engagement – Survey
Are you a computing teacher (any phase), a computing initial teacher trainer (any phase), a computing education researcher? Or do you work in a computer science outreach team or make or deliver computing education resources or CPD?
One of our members, researcher Jane Waite needs your help! Please complete our survey https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/SchoolUniversityLandscape
She wants to find out about the barriers and benefits of working across school and university groups. Your responses will inform guidance on how to improve the way we work together in the provision of computing education.
The report will be freely available and will include a description of the current landscape of the engagement between schools and universities with regard to computing education as well as recommendations on how to improve working across these institutional groups. This report is being produced by a group of organisations including Computing At Schools, the Council and Heads of Computing, Queen Mary University of London, Glasgow University, Swansea University, Stranmillis University and the BCS (Chartered Institute for IT).

In our first edtech policy and practice Thinktank, MirandaNet and ITTE will be joining with Technology, Pedagogy and Education Association to offer solutions to Secretary of State Damian Hinds’ research challenge. The questions we are posing are:
- How do we develop a strong evidence base for the use of technology in education?
- How do we test and trial technology products?
- How can we showcase good practice in education?

Exciting News!
Following the success of this year’s conference ITTE and MirandaNet are working on a closer partnership in 2019 that will be called the Technology, Pedagogy and Education Association (TPEA). This is intended to strengthen our voice because the English school system is currently 8,000 computing teachers short. As a result too many of our children are not receiving adequate education in computer science, information technology and digital literacy to prepare them for life’s challenges.
Information Technology and Teacher Education Association, (ITTE founded in 1986) agreed to continue their long term partnership with the MirandaNet Fellowship (founded in 1992) under the new name Technology, Pedagogy and Education Association (TPEA). This restructured learned society, to be formally launched in 2019, aims to continue the work of the partners in influencing policy and practice in education technology. The TPEA name was chosen to align with ITTE’s well established international journal, Technology, Pedagogy and Education (https://www.tandfonline.com/toc/rtpe20/current) published by Taylor Francis, and one of the top-ranked international journals in educational research. Together the two organisations publish widely in professional journals, newsletters and in the education press and write most of the standard course books used in teacher education published by Routledge.
You will be hearing more but this will not affect your membership of MirandaNet and your access to the information we share.
Influencing policy and practice in digital education
Professor Christina Preston, Chair of ITTE and founder of MirandaNet, about the history of our professional influence in policy and practice from the 1980s up to the current day.
Professional organisations stem from the tradition of medieval Trade Guilds and are still going strong. Wikipedia informs us that a guild is an association of artisans or merchants who oversee the practice of their craft/trade in a particular area. The earliest types of guild formed as confraternities of tradesmen. They were organised in a manner something between a professional association, a trade union, a cartel, and a secret society. MirandaNet extends its social media reach
MirandaNet is experimenting with a range of social media to increase engagement with our organisation. One such is an online ‘newspaper’. Please be aware that this is still an experiment but it allows the chance to bring to a new audience the work and thoughts of people this organisation admires and follows on Twitter.

Developing the Computing and presentation skills of FE students with learning difficulties and disabilities
Read this interesting report on how the ‘Literacy from Scratch’ project has been harnessed to enhance the learning of an under-represented group.
“Literacy from Scratch” is an international classroom project designed to develop computer coding skills (now a part of the new “Computing” curriculum in England) alongside literacy development, using the MIT visual coding language, Scratch.

Education innovation, practice-based research and pupil achievement
In May 2016 MirandaNet hosted an Unconference workshop to explore and discuss the classroom- based research it has been supporting with its Associates. (The workshop pages are here.) The workshop was sponsored by and actively supported by Gaia Technologies, a MirandaNet Associate. Their media team has now produced a lively and interesting video of the day’s events.
