Online safety and digital literacy: how do they feature in schools?

Rob Ellis: Naace member and Fellow of MirandaNet

Summary: This article about the teaching of online safety and digital literacy has grown out of a shared concern amongst education technologies experts that the development and learning of issues related to online safety and aspects of digital literacy have stalled in UK schools. We have based our views on wide and valuable experience of educators who responded to our preliminary survey from two professional organisations, Naace and the MirandaNet Fellowship, as well some schools. The results indicate how many issues are still to be resolved and identifies areas for urgent research, and so we conclude, not with answers, with more research questions.
